Why More Families Are Going Back to Travel Agents
After years of everyone booking vacations online, a quiet revolution is happening: families are going back to travel agents. And it’s not nostalgia — it’s math.
The explosion of booking platforms, comparison sites, and discount portals has created a paradox: more options, but more confusion, more hidden fees, and more stress. When something goes wrong (a flight cancellation, a hotel that doesn’t match its photos, a resort that oversold), you’re on your own with an 800 number and a chat bot.
A good travel agent — especially one who specializes in your destination and speaks your language — delivers something no algorithm can: expertise, relationships, and someone who actually picks up the phone when you need help.
Here are the 10 questions you should ask before booking with any travel agent.
1. Do You Specialize in This Type of Travel?
Travel is a broad industry. An agent who specializes in luxury European tours is not the same as one who specializes in family all-inclusive packages to the Caribbean. Ask specifically: what percentage of your bookings are family vacations to destinations like mine?
At Travel Cloud, 100% of what we do is vacation packages to family destinations — Orlando, Cancún, Las Vegas, Punta Cana, Pocono, and Daytona. That focus means our agents know these destinations and resort options inside and out.
2. Do Your Agents Speak Spanish?
For Hispanic families, this is non-negotiable. You should be able to explain your family’s needs, ask detailed questions, and understand the full terms of your booking in your preferred language. An agent who can switch seamlessly between English and Spanish will serve your family significantly better.
All Travel Cloud agents are bilingual. We’ve been serving the Hispanic community since day one, and we understand the cultural nuances that matter — from family size considerations to preferred destinations and dining preferences.
3. What’s Included — and What Isn’t?
This is where online booking fails families most often. The advertised price often excludes: resort fees, airport transfers, travel insurance, children’s fees, meal plan upgrades, and gratuities. Ask your agent for a complete breakdown of what’s in the package and what you’ll pay separately.
A transparent agent will walk you through every line item before you commit. Red flag: an agent who can’t clearly explain the all-in cost of your vacation.
4. Are You Working with Direct Resort Contracts?
Agencies that book directly with resorts (rather than through third-party wholesalers) often have access to better rates, room upgrades, and exclusive amenities. Ask how the agent sources their inventory and whether they have direct relationships with the properties they recommend.
5. What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?
This is the most important question — and the one most people forget to ask. What’s the process if a flight is cancelled? If the resort has an issue? If there’s a hurricane or travel disruption? Ask for a specific example of how the agent handled a problem for a previous client.
6. Can I Talk to Past Clients?
A confident, reputable agency will have no problem connecting you with past clients or sharing genuine reviews. Look for testimonials that mention specific agents by name — that’s a sign of real relationships, not fabricated reviews.
7. What’s Your Cancellation and Change Policy?
Life happens. Kids get sick. Work schedules change. Understand exactly what happens to your money if you need to cancel or modify your trip. What’s refundable? What penalties apply? When do those penalties kick in? Get it in writing.
8. Do You Offer Travel Insurance?
A responsible travel agent will always offer travel insurance and explain why it matters — especially for international trips. If an agent never mentions insurance, that’s a red flag. For Caribbean destinations during hurricane season, insurance isn’t optional.
9. How Long Have You Been in Business?
Experience matters enormously in travel. An agency that has been operating for 10+ years has navigated economic downturns, natural disasters, pandemics, and countless client situations. They have the relationships and protocols that newer agencies simply haven’t had time to build.
Travel Cloud has been serving families for over 25 years. We’ve seen it all — and we’ve always taken care of our clients.
10. How Do You Charge — Commission or Fees?
Most vacation package agents earn commission from resorts and tour operators, which means their service costs you nothing extra. Clarify upfront how the agent is compensated. Be wary of agents who charge high fees for basic services that should be included.
